I’m a choreographer, dancer, physical theatre artist and teacher, currently working indoors and in the landscape. My creative practice employs movement sourced in authentic experience shaped into work that offers viewers new perspectives, whether light-hearted or more serious. Informed by contemporary dance techniques, dance and theatre improvisation, yoga, guided imagery and somatic practices, my work often includes elements of character, narrative and/or text.
I’m passionate about the transformational power of artistic practices that enrich the lives of audiences, participants and performers, as well as expanding the concept of who can participate in art making. This has led to choreographing, performing and teaching in the USA, in Scotland and abroad across a wide variety of professional, educational and community contexts, working in an inclusive way with all ages and abilities. https://theworkroom.org.uk/members/sharon-took-zozaya
My recent creative work includes a variety of cross art-form projects and outdoor performances. Findhorn Bay Festival 2022 premiered Finding Petunia LittleTree, a physical theatre, dance and spoken word piece about climate change with original text and Quee MacArthur’s sound design. In 2020, Shadows and Dappled Light, a work responding to finely crafted pencil portraits by Randy Klinger premiered at Citymoves’ DanceLive festival in Aberdeen. I have also made and directed bespoke pieces for several Artist Hunts and other performances in the Findhorn Ecovillage, where I’ve been based since returning to Scotland in 2018.
While in California from 2003 to 2018, my solo and group works were selected for performance at several San Francisco Bay Area festivals, including the Santa Cruz Fringe Festival, Monterey Dance Fest; Discourses Off the Wall; sjDANCECO ChoreoProject Awards; West Wave Festival; and So Wat Now?. Solo and group works were also presented on tour with violinist Randy Cono, at the National Steinbeck Center, with Santa Cruz Chamber Orchestra and in performances at The 418 Project, Santa Cruz.
