Flagstone Theatre are currently accepting expressions of interest from venues and promoters for presenting in autumn 2026.
Flagstone Theatre presents Beastie, a darkly comic solo show that reimagines Scotland’s storytelling tradition for contemporary audiences. Blending Highland folklore, contemporary narrative and real community voices, this gripping, character-led production transports audiences to the shores of Loch Morar – home to Morag, one of Scotland’s oldest and most overlooked monsters.
Written and directed by Izzy Gray (Keepers of the Light) and featuring a shapeshifting performance by Fraser Sivewright (The Testament of Gideon Mack), the show follows a reclusive monster hunter whose carefully guarded solitude is disrupted when a less-than-flattering documentary sends him unintentionally viral. Determined to reclaim his story, he sets out on a one-man odyssey through Scotland’s wild landscapes — confronting legacy, loneliness and the modern-day “beasties” who feel suspiciously like the human descendants of old monster tales.
Both darkly funny and quietly unsettling, Beastie is part road trip, part character study, asking what we choose to believe, what we inherit, and whether the stories we tell ultimately shape who we become.
Developed with support from Edinburgh Performing Arts Development, the Scottish Storytelling Centre and Creative Scotland’s Open Fund, the production premiered to a sold-out audience and has received multiple 4 and 5-star reviews. Corr Blimey described it as “a rare feat: a solo show that feels communal, a dark comedy that leaves a bruise, and a folkloric tale that refuses to stay in the past.”
Community collaboration sits at the heart of the work. A pre-show soundscape — created from oral history interviews with the Morar community and revoiced by Highlands-based actors — roots the production in lived experience while gently interrogating how myths are packaged and consumed.
Though performed by a single actor, Beastie feels expansive and cinematic. Traditional storytelling is layered with an original folk-inspired score, movement, animation and striking visual design to create an atmosphere that is both intimate and transportive.
Designed specifically for rural touring, the production is economical, adaptable and delivered by a team of two. With minimal staging, flexible technical requirements and key equipment supplied, the show responds easily to village halls, studio theatres and non-traditional spaces without compromising artistic quality.
Wraparound Activity & Access
Beastie is conceived as more than a performance — it is a shared storytelling event. Alongside the show, presenters can host a pre-show sound booth inviting audiences to contribute their own local myths and memories, creating an immediate sense of place and participation.
Bookings can include a choice of two creative workshops, post-show Q&As with the artists, and an innovative QR trail that encourages audiences to explore folklore within their own landscapes beyond the theatre walls. Captioned and relaxed performances are available, supporting access and widening participation where desired.
