Monster

‘Monster’ is a brand new 50 minute solo personal autobiographical spoken word show about ‘monsters’, ocean myth, fear and identity. It looks at what we consider to be ‘monstrous’ especially in women. It is about reconnecting with the ferocious, ravenous and subversive.

 It looks at the mythology of the sea and its creatures and is told through original spoken word with an original music score. It includes fish facts, it is funny and confessional and champions seeing the best in both people and pond life.

The show looks at being neurodivergent and has themes of gender equality and mental health. It would be marketed as theatre, comedy, spoken word and literary arts and would appeal to the LGBTQ+ community, creatives and people interested in equality, art and mental health.

My previous work has been described as ‘hilarious, wholesome, powerful’ and ‘transporting and soul cleansing’ as well as ‘a mic drop on women’s experiences’ (audience members) and ‘an act of creative mastery’ (UCLAN review, Lancs Fringe).

This new show examines the myth of the selkie and merfolk, with women’s agency being punished and demonised (eg. religious iconography depicting mermaids as warnings against the dangers of vanity). It is about borders, adventure and togetherness, about extending the boundaries of the self into unknown territory in the ocean (and how this might be linked to community/humanity). It is about the transformative power of theatre and storytelling as vehicles towards authenticity and truth.

 This show has low tech requirements, is suitable for all ages and has no special effects.
