Evie Waddell, a talented Gaelic speaker, d/Deaf musician, and performer, is set to embark on a captivating tour of her show, Fàilte Gu BSL. This immersive gig-performance-ceilidh explores the experiences of creative and political connection across isolation, encompassing communities, individuals, and diverse cultural Scots.
Fàilte Gu BSL presents an extraordinary blend of Gaelic and Scots signed songs, delving into various aspects of traditional culture. Evie Waddell, along with her cast, employs traditional songs, stories, sign language, and both contemporary and traditional dance to unlock opportunities for d/Deaf individuals to embrace Scottish culture. This collaborative performance aims to amplify the significance of each unique “cultural voice” while shedding light on the relationships between Gaelic and British Sign Language (BSL).
The repertoire of Fàilte Gu BSL encompasses a rich array of material, ranging from age-old working songs to captivating narratives about mythical creatures like ‘Uamh an Oir.’ The show also features Gillebride Macmillian’s moving plea for refugees, ‘Duan an Fhogarraich,’ as well as the poignant ‘Last Leviathan’ addressing the theme of impending extinction.
Evie Waddell also presents a heartfelt self-penned piece, a personal song exploring the experience of deafness. And fear not, as the show’s atmosphere is frequently uplifted with an assortment of delightful and entertaining songs.
On some shows, Evie will also be conducting an associated workshop during the afternoon. Participants will have the opportunity to ‘Waulk The Tweed,’ experience step dance, and learn a signed Gaidhlig chorus.
