Ma Name Is Isabelle is a reimagining of the famous bothy ballad, Bogie’s Bonnie Belle. Bogie’s Bonnie Belle has always been told from the male’s perspective and tells the story of a farm labourer who impregnated his boss’ daughter and was dismissed from the farm without a fee. In some versions of the ballad, the protagonist gloats about their forceful encounter with Isabelle.

Told entirely in Doric, the native dialect spoken in the North East of Scotland, this unique and easy-to-follow spoken word performance by Lucy Beth unveils Isabelle’s story for the first time. Isabelle was a young woman impregnated against her will, ostracised as an unmarried mother and separated from her son. Ultimately, this show is an unforgettable experience that celebrates Isabelle’s strength and triumph over adversity.
