Spinster

Spinster is a storytelling show that explores three traditional Scottish folktales in an attempt to follow the change in definition of the word spinster from “a financially independent woman with a valuable skill”, through “an unmarried woman”, and finally to synonymous with “witch”. This show uses a multisensory experience to take the audience on a journey through history and myth, reflecting on the current position of women in society through these stories. The audience will be encouraged to handle flax and spinning tools as part of the performance, welcoming them into the craft of spinning as well as the stories themselves. This one-woman show is atmospheric, folkloric, and smart. It explores the themes of nature, women, and survival. It has a specifically Scottish flavour as all three folktales come from Scotland (ranging from Orkney down to the Borders), and highlights the
vibrant cultural heritage of Scotland. This show is aimed at anyone interested in folk traditions, history, and folklore.
