Boswell

Boswell is a witty, engaging new play inspired by James Boswell and Dr Samuel Johnson’s famous 1773 journey through Scotland and the Hebrides. Set across two timeframes, with just four performers, it brings to life the personalities, arguments, landscapes, and encounters that shaped their travels – mixing history, humour, and humanity in equal measure.

We aim to tour Boswell across Scotland, following (as closely as possible) the original route: from Edinburgh and the Lowlands, through the Highlands, and out to the islands. Each performance resonates with its setting, connecting audiences directly to the places where these great conversations once took place.

For venues and programmers, the production offers a flexible, high-quality piece of theatre that blends classic literature with contemporary storytelling. It’s ideal for intimate spaces, town halls, community venues, and regional theatres, with strong appeal to local audiences, heritage groups, and visitors alike.
