Night Waking

Night Waking is a dark, vicious and funny play about colonialism and motherhood. Irish-Mauritian playwright Shireen Mula’s brand new adaptation of  the successful novel by Sarah Moss is brought to life with a feat of acting virtuosity in this one woman tour de force.

Anna Bennett is a historian, mother, and wife, whose life is unravelling under the pressures of motherhood, marriage, and isolation on a remote Scottish island. She is sharp-witted, fiercely intelligent, and darkly humorous, but also deeply vulnerable – grappling with exhaustion, self-doubt, and a growing obsession with a buried past.

Supported and enhanced by live music, the play’s non-linear structure shifts between present-day struggles, historical letters, and a possible crime. Multiple characters, time periods, and emotional states are masterfully delivered in this nuanced, powerful, virtuosic solo performance.
