Plockton Music School

The National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music, a.k.a. Plockton Music School, has become well established as a place where talented young traditional musicians of secondary school age from throughout Scotland can come and develop their skills. Many of its former students are now at the forefront of their generation of Scottish musicians.

Students of the Centre learn not only playing and singing, but many of the other diverse skills which go to make up a modern professional musician. One of the most valuable experiences they receive is the annual concert tour, which gives them a realistic experience of life on the road as a professional musician.

The Centre teaches accordion, clarsach, fiddle, pipes, piano, guitar, whistle, flute, and Scots and Gaelic song, and the concerts feature the students performing in various combinations, including them all playing together in a powerful finale. Nearly all of the youngsters are multi-instrumentalists, and the repertoire of tunes and songs old and new ensures that there really is something for everybody in the show.
